OUR STORY
It is the story of Kazakhstan’s incredible apple forests growing wild on the mountainsides above its former capital and largest city, Almaty, that inspired the creation of Apple City Cider.
Locals and visitors to Kazakhstan have long suspected that these unique-tasting apples could be perfect for cidermaking. With a passion for cider from time working in England’s world-renowned West Country cider-region, British cidermaker Alex Thomas and his Kazakh wife, Aizhan, decided to put that theory to the test and formed Apple City Cider company.
Our cidery is located in the rural fringes of Almaty, a city famous for its apples and whose name in Kazakh means, ‘Father of Apples’. We set out to produce delicious, sparkling cider from specially-selected local apple varieties. While similar in style to ciders you might enjoy around some of the world’s great cider regions, we believe our cider also contains a unique flavour of Kazakhstan and those amazing wild apple forests sprawling down the mountain slopes.
